Plot Summary

The plot begins immediately after the end of Into the Wild, the previous novel in the series. Fireheart, a formerly domestic cat (or “kittypet”), chose to live as a feral cat and was adopted into ThunderClan. As the novel begins, Fireheart has just been given the status of a warrior within the clan: Warriors are strong young cats who protect the clan and its territory. Fireheart’s closest friend is a cat named Graystripe, who was also just promoted to warrior status. There are four clans: ThunderClan, RiverClan, ShadowClan, and WindClan. Before the start of the novel, a cat named Brokenstar was ShadowClan’s corrupt leader: He was responsible for driving WindClan out of their traditional territory and causing other conflicts with the clans. ShadowClan drove Brokenstar out and replaced him. However, WindClan hasn’t yet returned.

For their first assignment as warriors, Fireheart and Graystripe are sent to bring WindClan back to their territory. However, conflict arises between the two friends when they disagree about how to handle secret information: Fireheart and Graystripe learned that Tigerclaw, a powerful warrior within ThunderClan, is corrupt and murdered other cats to secure his own power. Fireheart feels compelled to share this information with Bluestar, ThunderClan’s leader; however, Bluestar refuses to believe it. Fireheart remains suspicious of Tigerclaw throughout the novel, and Tigerclaw’s disdain for Fireheart’s origins as a domestic cat intensify this distrust.

Fireheart and Graystripe successfully bring the cats of WindClan back to their territory. However, dynamics between the clans remain tense because RiverClan and ShadowClan would have preferred to take WindClan’s territory for themselves. Fireheart and Graystripe inadvertently make these tensions worse because they pass through RiverClan territory while accompanied by some WindClan cats: When they encounter RiverClan cats, a fight ensues, and one of the RiverClan cats is accidentally killed. These events lead Bluestar to anticipate that RiverClan and ShadowClan will eventually form an alliance and attack ThunderClan.

Meanwhile, Fireheart and Graystripe are assigned to train two young kits (Brackenpaw and Cinderpaw) as apprentices. In addition, Fireheart has a chance encounter with his sister, Princess, who still lives as a domestic cat. He begins secretly spending time with her since they share fond memories. Graystripe has a secret too: After a chance encounter, he and a RiverClan cat named Silverstream have fallen in love; however, relationships between cats from different clans are forbidden. Fireheart begrudgingly keeps his friend’s secret but is often frustrated about Graystripe’s absence and having to cover for him. The friendship begins to deteriorate.

Cinderpaw is badly injured in what may have been an attempt at a coup by Tigerclaw; while Fireheart can’t prove that anything malicious happened, this incident increases his suspicions. He’s also sad because Cinderpaw, who showed great promise in becoming a warrior, now can never fulfil this role. When Princess brings Fireheart one of her young kittens and asks him to raise it as a clan cat, Fireheart agrees and brings the kit back to the clan, where he’s named Cloudkit.

Brokenstar and a group of rogue cats attack ThunderClan’s camp after luring most of the warriors away and leaving the camp vulnerable. Fireheart and a few allies successfully defend the camp; Brokenstar, badly injured and lacking sight, is kept as a prisoner. Almost immediately, WindClan sends a desperate appeal for help: An alliance of RiverClan and ShadowClan cats is attacking them. Fireheart, Graystripe, and most of the other warriors are sent to help WindClan in the battle. Tigerclaw doesn’t come to Fireheart’s aid even when he’s in danger of being killed, furthering his belief that Tigerclaw would like to see him dead. Fireheart ends up in a fight with Silverstream (who’s fighting on RiverClan’s behalf); at Graystripe’s urging, he allows her to escape, but another ThunderClan cat witnesses him doing so. This action casts suspicion on Fireheart’s loyalty to the clan.

When the battle breaks up, RiverClan and ShadowClan have been driven away, but many tensions remain since the clans haven’t achieved any resolution. However, Graystripe is grateful for Fireheart’s loyalty, and the two restore their friendship.
